Hawzah News Agency | Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, in Sahifah Sajjadiyyah, makes the following supplication to the Almighty God:
«وَاهْدِنِی لِلَّتِی هِیَ أَقْوَمُ وَ اسْتَعْمِلْنِی بِمَا هُوَ أَسْلَمُ.»
"Guide me to the straightest path and appoint me to the safest deeds." (Supplication no. 14)
Explanation:
To understand this excerpt from Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, in Sahifah Sajjadiyyah, we refer to the following Qur'anic verse:
«أَلَمْ أَعْهَدْ إِلَیْکُمْ یَا بَنِی آدَمَ أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوا الشَّیْطَانَ إِنَّهُ لَکُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِینٌ وَأَنِ اعْبُدُونِی هَـٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُّسْتَقِیمٌ.»
"‘Did I not exhort you, O children of Adam, saying, 'Do not worship Satan. He is indeed your manifest enemy. Worship Me. That is a straight path?'" (Surah Yasin; 36: 60–61)
According to this divine statement, humans are never outside of two states: they are either servants of God or servants of Satan. In reality, throughout life, humans are always confronted with two fronts: the camp of God and the camp of Satan. Obedience to either one equates to worshipping it, as Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, explains in a narration, interpreting "obedience" as "worship":
«مَنْ أَطَاعَ رَجُلاً فِی مَعْصِیَةٍ فَقَدْ عَبَدَهُ.»
"Whoever obeys someone in disobedience to God has indeed worshipped him." (Osul al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 398)
Hence, Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, teaches us to ask the Almighty God to take charge of our affairs. To guide us toward the best and most reliable path when we act, and to lead us to the most righteous deeds. This is because, if we do not proceed on the path of divine will and obedience, we will undoubtedly find ourselves in Satan’s camp, executing his commands. That is, even if we believe ourselves to be free and claim to be liberated from the obligations of religion or others’ authority, we are unknowingly and in truth submissive to Satan. Satan then drags us in whichever direction he desires.
Conclusion:
Ultimately, every person, in whatever path or activity they are engaged, must evaluate their path and deeds to understand their position in this world. They must ask themselves: Are they breathing in the camp of God, or in the camp of Satan?
